For several years now Texas boys have been going to the Summer Leadership Camp sponsored by Youth Service International (YSI) at Camp St. Andrew in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania. As word spreads, enthusiasm grows and the number of camp attendees from Texas rises steadily every year. Though many Texans have made the sacrifices necessary to travel such a long distance for the Pennsylvania camp, many more have been left behind. YSI has since determined that the time is right to start a Texas camp, in the hopes of providing more local young men with the opportunity to grow in leadership qualities and personal virtues. In June 2004, a group of young men volunteered their time and talents to start a camp in Texas. Lack of resources and a sufficient campsite marked the beginnings of the Texas camp, which is now known as Leadership Camp Texas (LCT). In July, a location was found on 400 acres of beautifully re-wooded countryside bordering Carolina Creek and Thomas Lake in the Lake Livingston area. An incredible site for the introduction of Leadership Camp Texas, it includes cabins, cafeteria, a pool, sports fields and courts, a ropes course, and water sports. Earnest work by many hands continues to create the setting for a successful camp for four years in a row. For 2009 we found a location in the Texas Hill country: 800 acres of rolling hills, natural springs, and woods near LBJ Lake & Marble Falls. The same awesome facilities as before plus horse-back riding, hiking trails, spacious sports fields, first-rate dining, and paint-ball course.
LCT aims to help boys develop into fine, hard-working and courageous men who can be leaders among their peers. The camp's full, well-balanced schedule is designed to motivate the boys to use their talents in order to lead and serve others while developing good character and strong friendships. The Spiritual care of these activities is entrusted to Opus Dei, a personal prelature of the Catholic Church. Opus Dei seeks to spread the message that all are called to seek holiness in their everyday lives.
